Rehabilitation
The World Health Organization defines rehabilitation of people with disabilities as “a process aimed at enabling them to reach and maintain their optimal physical, sensory, intellectual, psychological and social functional levels. Rehabilitation provides disabled people with the tools they need to attain independence and self-determination.“
Specifically, rehabilitation is a time-limited, holistic, interdisciplinary, specialized treatment approach, involving various health professionals, the individual and his next of kin.
Reykjalundur is the largest rehabilitation centre in Iceland where rehabilitation is a team effort. Each profession with specialist training and registration working within rehabilitation in the Icelandic health care system is represented at Reykjalundur. Treatment is planned and provided in accordance with individual needs, based on interviews, tests and specific assessment tools used by various professionals. Treatment aims to reinforce self-help and self-care in light of personal factors, family situation, environment, culture, living circumstances and community.
Emphasis is placed on active participation by the individual together with education about the basics of a healthy lifestyle, nutrition, physical activity and sleep. Even if the overall goal of the rehabilitation process is to increase well-being and quality of life, the main goal for the individual is independent living, to be able to make decisions about their life and to be an active participant in their community.
Reykjalundur plays a large role in the training of social sciences and health sciences students. The interdisciplinary team approach makes Reykjalundur a sought after placement by trainees and visitors from both within Iceland and abroad.
Reykjalundur´s logo reflects the work at Reykjalundur. The logo includes two larger circles intertwined with two smaller circles above them signifying movement, support, love, and co-operation.
